Key Learnings from "Emotional Intelligence" by Daniel Goleman
A Guide to Managing Impulsiveness and Self-Control
Background
When Goleman’s book was published in 1995 it became an important influence on my professional and personal relationships. I have re-visited the book often over the years in an attempt to assess and perhaps reset how I manage my emotions. The book was released soon after I started my consulting career. In my management background I had become a somewhat authoritarian leader. This was not a style that was successful in helping clients make improvements in their organizations. While I was adept at analyzing processes and identifying solutions, change takes place through people. I had to work on improving my EQ (Emotional Quotient). It further benefited me when I moved into a leadership position at an institution of higher education. There were so many with high IQs but not always coupled with high EQs. Goleman’s book provided a platform for developing strategies to deal with this environment.
It has also paid dividend in my personal relationships. I have become calmer and more patient. I am lucky to have many friends and former colleagues who are respectful and not prone to emotional peaks and valleys. But, over the last year I have been disappointed with a few individuals with extreme emotional responses. While I want to distance myself form these individuals and their behaviors it does seem that I should somehow find a way to be supportive. Perhaps they will read this blog. Perhaps their response will be positive.
I do recommend reading this book as it has so much valuable insight.
What is Emotional Intelligence?
Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize, understand, manage, and utilize emotions effectively. Goleman identifies five key components of emotional intelligence:
· Self-awareness: The ability to recognize one’s emotions and their effects.
