The Phone in My Camera Bag
Add-On Lenses, Apps, and What It Really Costs to Build a Smartphone Photography Kit
I've owned a Fujifilm X100VI for a while now, and I still reach for it when I want a photograph I know I'll print or sit with for a long time. But over the past several months I've also built out a second, much smaller kit around my iPhone 17 Pro — a SANDMARC 2x telephoto lens on a case mount, a SANDMARC Creator Grip, and the Reeflex Pro camera app instead of Apple's own. That combination has changed how often the X100VI leaves the shelf, and it's made me pay closer attention to a market I'd mostly ignored: the fast-growing business of add-on lenses, grips, and pro camera apps built around flagship phones.
This is my attempt to work through what I've learned — who the serious players are, what it costs to build a kit like mine versus buying a fixed-lens camera, why a grip and a tripod thread matter more on a phone than they do on a real camera body, how the image quality actually compares to something like the X100VI, and what's genuinely pulling landscape, travel, and street photographers toward this gear.
